Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these drugs need to be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Experts propose the way of the injections explains the amplified rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural changes.
